From 20th January, India to Have Mobile Number Portability

From 20th January, i.e. today onwards, Mobile Number Portability (MNP) is being launched in India. As the service is being launched, users will be able to switch from one service provider to another without changing the present mobile number. A user may not be happy with the plans given to him or he or she may have connectivity related problems.

Among the service providers, Vodafone and Idea are trying to push the Mobile Number Portability concept, as they are planning to get a new lot of subscribers from this technology.

First, the user will have to send an SMS to 1900 writing PORT <Current mobile number>. After that he will receive an SMS on his mobile number stating his unique porting code. This code is needed while approaching the new service provider for MNP switch. At the next step, clear all your outstanding bills with the current service provider.

After this step, visit the outlet of the new service provider and apply for a MNP program and give them your unique porting code. This unique porting code needs to be used as early as possible as it has got an expiry date. The new service provider will approach the old service provider for approval and the entire process will take around 4 to 7 days before you get converted to the new service provider. The current service provider will inform you about the date and time from when their service will get discontinued and you will be converted to a new service provider.
