HPU was recognized on 22 July 1970 under an Act of the HP Legislative Assembly. It is the located near the area of the Indian Institute of Advanced Study. The University is a leading institution in teaching and promoting research in India. It is entirely financed by the Government of Himachal Pradesh and the University Grants Commission.
The University embraces the International Centre for Distance Education. Nearly 80 colleges are under affiliation of Himachal Pradesh University for Under-graduate, Post-graduate, engineering, medical, dental, education and Sanskrit colleges.
